What is the Anat Baniel Method®
NeuroMovement®?
The Anat Baniel Method® (ABM) NeuroMovement® is a gentle, brain-centered approach that uses movement to support the brain’s ability to sense, learn, adapt, and organize. Rather than treating the brain and body as separate systems, ABM recognizes that every movement provides the brain with meaningful information—and that the way we move can influence how we think, learn, connect, and function at every age.
Through precise, gentle, and varied movement experiences, an ABM practitioner helps each person notice differences in sensation and movement.
This process, known as differentiation, gives the brain more information and more choices. As movement becomes increasingly refined and complex, the brain can discover new and more efficient ways of organizing the body.
Connect the brain and the body
ABM NeuroMovement® is grounded in the understanding that the brain and body are constantly communicating. Movement can influence attention, coordination, balance, comfort, emotional regulation, learning, and our ability to engage with the world around us.
Rather than focusing only on isolated symptoms or trying to force a particular outcome, ABM takes an integrative approach. It supports the whole person—movement, sensation, attention, emotion, communication, learning, and self-awareness—while honoring each individual’s unique nervous system, history, abilities, and goals.
ABM is guided by nine essential principles, known as the Nine Essentials, including movement with variation, flexibility, slow movement, and the power of imagination. These principles create an environment in which the brain can receive and explore new information without force, pressure, or the expectation of perfection.
ABM NeuroMovement® can support children with neurodiversity, developmental differences, learning challenges, motor difficulties, neurological conditions, and complex health needs. For children, sessions may help create greater possibilities for movement, communication, attention, play, learning, connection, and participation in everyday life.
Adults can also benefit from ABM. It may be supportive for adults living with neurological conditions, stroke, injury, chronic pain, movement limitations, stress, or age-related changes, as well as those seeking greater ease, coordination, vitality, and self-awareness. Adults do not need to have a diagnosis or specific movement challenge to explore ABM; many people engage with the method to deepen their relationship with their bodies and discover more comfortable, efficient, and adaptable ways of moving.
ABM does not attempt to force a child or adult into a predetermined standard, nor does it seek to “fix” who they are. Instead, it supports the brain in discovering more options. By focusing on learning, adaptability, and possibility, ABM can help people of all ages develop greater participation, independence, well-being, and authentic self-expression.
At Evolve Movement, ABM is offered through a compassionate, individualized approach. Christine works with children, adults, and families to understand their unique needs and goals, while helping caregivers and participants recognize how learning can continue beyond the session and into everyday life.
NeuroMovement® is guided by nine principles that Anat Baniel identified as important conditions for awakening the brain's learning process. Known as the Nine Essentials, they are:
Movement with Attention: Bringing attention to what we feel as we move
Slow: Slowing movement down so the brain has greater opportunity to notice differences.
Variation: Exploring many possibilities rather than repeatedly practicing one "correct" way..
Subtlety: Reducing force and effort so smaller differences can become perceptible.
Enthusiasm: Recognizing discoveries and differences in ways that amplify learning.
Flexible Goals: Holding intentions while remaining open to unexpected pathways and possibilities.
The Learning Switch: Creating conditions of curiosity, interest, and discovery that support learning.
Imagination & Dreams: Using imagination to expand beyond what is already known or currently possible.
Awareness: Noticing what we are doing, sensing, thinking, and experiencing.
Together, the Nine Essentials create conditions for greater awareness, differentiation, exploration, and learning—without force, pressure, or the need to follow a predetermined path.
